  1. 1. Well, this story reflects the criminal part of William's life. What Jimmy Valentine went through in the story is comparable(but not identical) to what happened to William. In 1896, William went to jail from stealing from a bank's funds(Jimmy Valentine was arrested various times, according to the story for stealing from banks) before fleeing to Honduras(He stole, just like Jimmy). William served 3 years of a 5 year sentence(Jimmy served 10 months of a 4 year sentence) before moving to NYC(He served time in jail, just like Jimmy). Finally, William lost her wife, Athol Estes(his dearly beloved), because of tuberculosis(Jimmy lost his dearly beloved Annabel because he had shown her his true nature)before writing his first short story(They both lost loved ones).

    2. Because Agatha would probably die in there, his beloved wife asked for help and because his pride as a safe-cracker wouldn't let him just stand there.

    3. The first foreshadowing is seen when the story tells us that Jimmy works in the prisons shoe shop(we later find out about him opening a shoe shop in Elmore). There is also another foreshadow seen when the story tells us that he uses homemade tools to crack safes(This is how he saves Agatha at the end).

    4. What is ironic is that in the end, he has to use his safe-cracking used in his crimes for saving Agatha.

  2. 1.This reflects Williams criminal past life. The time he was arrested by stealing funds of the bank he used to work. In the story Jimmy is also arrested and goes to jail. Like in William and jimmy’s they each decided to move to another place to start a new life.
    2. Ralph risks everything because he knew if he didn’t do something Agatha would die.
    3. Jimmy was going to give out the suitcase and while that’s happening Agatha gets locked in the safe. The first things that come to your mine is that Jimmy is going to use the tools again.
    4. When Jimmy decides to give the suitcase suddenly it happens that Agatha gets locked inside the safe.

  3. 1. The story reflects the part of William's life where he was a criminal. William stole funds from the bank where he worked, whereas Jimmy was a cat burglar. They both went to jail and they both decided to settle down soon after that.

    2. I believe that not only did Ralph do it to save Agathas' life, but he also did it to save himself. When you think about it if Ralph were to leave Agatha to die just so he wouldn't be discovered, he would've never been able to live with himself knowing he could've done something.

    3. The author leads you to believe that Jimmy will be using his tools again when he decides to bring them along. When Anabelle asks about what is in the suitcase and Jimmy lies, you partially know the truth will be coming out. Also the fact that Ben Price is already on Jimmy's case is foreshadowing that Ben will soon find Jimmy's location, and will go looking for him.

    4. The irony at the end of the story is that just when Jimmy decides to leave his safe-cracking life behind, he needs to use his skills to save Agatha.

  4. 1. The story reflects Williams criminal life. Both William and Jimmy were arrested for stealing from banks. When they both were release from prison they started a new life and changed their names.

    2. Ralph risked everything to save Agatha because he new she would die if he didn't help her.

    3. The first clue the author gives us is that Jimmy worked in the prison shoe shop and the when he is a free man opens his own shoe shop. Another clue is that when Agatha gets stuck in the vault Jimmy had his special suitcase so the first thing that comes to our mind is that he will be opening the vault.

4.The ironic part of the ending I the when Jimmy decides to leave his past behind he need to open a safe to save a life.

  5. 1.William’s life is reflected in the story because of William’s criminal life, the both were arrested for stealing banks and both went to jail. Also when they were released they changed their names and started a new life.

2.Ralph risks his life because he knew that Agatha’s would die in there and because then he wouldn’t be able to live happy knowing that could have helped and didn’t do so. I think that he did it for him too.

3.The clues that the author gives you that foreshadows the future is when Jimmy lies about the suitcase and that tells you that he is going to use he’s tools again to free Agatha.

4.The irony in this story is that after Jimmy decides to leave his criminal life behind (safe-crackin) he needs to use his skills to get Agatha out.

  6. 1. The story reflects part of William life exactly his criminal one. William was arrested for stealing money from a bank and in the story Jimmy was arrested several times for it to. Another thing that is reflected in the story is that when William gat out of prison he change his name to leave the past behind and start a new life and Jimmy also do that.

    2. Ralph risk everything to safe agatha because he knew that she will probably die in there. Also that Ralph know how to open does doors.

    3. One clue that the author give to us is that he have his special suitcase with him when suddenly Agatha gat lock in. Another clue is that in jail he worked in a shoe shop and he then open a shoe shop

    4. The ironic part of the ending was that he save the life of agatha with the same things that he use to became a criminal

  7. 1.William Sydney Porter and Jimmy Valentine are similar. They both had robbed from a bank, they both served less time in jail than what they were supposed to, they both changed their names, and they both started a new life.

2.Everybody was suffering and he could not withstand that, he felt that he had to save her and he was the only one who could.

3.When Mr.Adams got the new safe and Jimmy was with the tools, I knew something was gonna happen that he had to reveal his skills in front of them.

4.Ben Price was looking for Jimmy to arrest him and yet, in the end, they met and Ben Price let Jimmy leave.

  8. 1) William Sydney Porter's life is similar or reflected in the story because he was also a thief like Jimmy. They both stole from bank., Jimmy broke into them and William worked in on of them (stealing the funds).

    2) Ralph risked losing Annabel and his liberty to save Agatha's life because he HAD become a good person.

    3) One of the clues the author gives is when Jimmy has his tools in hand (in his suitcase) because you can kind of figure that he's going to use them later on in the story.

    4) The irony at the end of the story is that Jimmy was leaving his stealing career in the past and then he had to use it to save Agatha's life. He used his bad for good.

  9. 1. There are many things in the story that could have been taken from his personal life. In the story, Jimmy is released early from jail, something that happened to O.Henry. Both flee to a new place and change their names as a way to leave their past behind them. Both have robbed a bank.
    2. I think he was going to help her regardless, but I think seeing his future wife with so much pain in her eyes really gave him the push he needed to take that risk.
    3. I think a clue the author gives us is when he says that the detective arrives at the town.
    4. To me, the irony of the story is when he leaves the bank he already knows that he probably not only just lost his liberty, but also his fiancee, and he sees the detective. He thinks he's going to arrest him and he basically gives in since he has probably nothing to lose. And yet the detective just walks away.

  10. 1. William's life reflects on the character's life because they both were in jail for robbing a bank. Also the both changed their names after coming out of jail.

2.Agatha was going to die, and Jimmy felt as he was the only one that could save her.

3.A clue given by the author may be when Jimmy has his suitcase with the tools. That made us(the reders) think he would go back to what he used to do.

    4. The irony at the end of the story was that he used tools to save Agatha( a good thing) when they were primary used from crimes.

  11. 1. Williams life is reflected on jimmys life. Both of them were criminals, rob a bank and get arrested for it. They changed their names after coming out of jail and started a new life.
    2. Ralph risked everything to help Agatha because he knew she would probably die if he didnt help her.
    3. One clue the author give us is when Agathas get locked and he had his special suitcase. Also Jimmy worked in the prison shoe shop and when he get out of jail open his owns.
4.The ironic part at the end is when he had to use what he want to leave behind to save a life

  12. 1. The fact that the character of the story was in jail and also William, makjes us think that William's life is reflected in the story.
    2. Jimmy risk his happy ending with Annabel just to save Agatha. He did htis becuase he saw that he had hurt alot of people and he made himslef mature to be happy foe his own good. At the end we also saw that Jimmy became more mature, not only for the girl she loved, but because he felt like that would make his life a little better.
    3. The author gave a clue when Jimmy was left with the suitcase full of his tools, when he was actually "going to return them".
    4. The irony shown on the story is when Jimmy was giving up his life as a thief with profesional tools, he was going to return them; he had to used them again. He had to used the tools, he used to hurt people, to actually save a life.

  13. 1)William is reflected as a criminal in the story, because he was arrested for stealing money from the banks. His life was not different from Jimmy's life because he was arrested for the same thing.

2)Ralph risked everything to save Agatha because he want to save her and he don't want to live thinking that he could save her.

3)For me the most important clue is when Jimmy has the suitcase with all the tools.

4)the end was ironic because he don't want to continue use that criminal skills, but he have to used to save Agatha

  14. 1. William's life is reflected in this story because, like Jimmy Valentine, he got arrested for bank robbery and both changed their ways of living.

    2. He risked everything because he truly loved Annabel Adams.

    3. Clues that the author provide to foreshadow the future are:
    - When Jimmy tells his friend to come pick up his home-made favorite tools.
    - The author focusing on the children playing with vault's knobs.
    - Ralph asks for his wive's flower pin, meaning that he was going to do something that
could get him back to jail and that he would like something to remember her for.
    4. The ending is ironic because the detective, who in the beginning arrested Jimmy Valentine
for breaking in and stealing from bank vaults, at the end let's hime go. Having done the same thing as before, but know he was a changed man.

    1. William Sydney Porter's life is reflected in the story because Jimmy Valentine and him were similar. They were both criminals, stole from the bank, went to jail, and finally try to remake their life and start again all over without their past.

2.Ralph risked everything in order to help Agatha because it something of life or death; also that was something he liked to do for so many years. And obviously he would be seen like a heroe for Annabel and her family.

3.Some clues the author provide that foreshadow the future are when he was going to get married with the banker's daughter we knew he would probably unlock something. And when Agatha gets locked in the safe we knew Ralph Spencer would return to be Jimmy Valentine and would use his tools and skills.

4.The irony in the ending of the story is that in the beginning he used his skills to robe banks and steal money or something valuable. Also he went to jail, but after that all that time of good behavior he didnt wanted to know anything about unlocking anymore. But at the end he used it for something so important like saving a child's life. Now we know that we can learn all kind of things in life, but what matters is how we use it, to do good things for others.

  16. 1. O. Henry's life was reflected in the story because he and J.V had similar lives and experiences, starting with their time in jail, both of them robbed a bank, and both of them tried to escape their old lives by changing their name and fleeing the place they were at.

    2. He knew that he wast the best in the business of opening safes. He had a lot of pride in his skills, and he had an opportunity to use his unique safe cracking skills to save a little girl; and finally do something good out of his skills.

    3. Clues that may foreshadow the ending are when he had his homemade tools. Also at the end, the kids were playing to much with the vault, so you see something bad is gonna happen. And the simple fact that he was the only one able to crack that safe open; that makes you instantly know that he is gonna do something about the situation.

    4. He had to use his skills he once used as a criminal, to help a poor girl who was probably going to die if he had not intervened.

  17. William's life is reflected and similiar to the story of Jimmy because the both got arrested for stealing bank funds. They both moved a lot. Jimmy risked it all because he was IN love with Annable, he finally could do something positive with those tools. The author gives you the clue that something is going to happend because he always carries his suitcase with tools and when Annabels dad gets the safe vault you know wheter its a tramp or he'll have to open it somehow, You can see it coming. Its ironic that in the ending of the story Ben find Jimmy but doesnt do anything and lets him go.

  18. 1.It reflects the criminal life William had, + its kinda same with Jimmy.
2.Because of the love of family. Dude are you let yo child in a safe suffocating to the death while its eyeballs pot to pieces!? AH HELL NO!!!(sorry i got way to excessive there)
3.He lockpicking tools. Why use them?
4."What is ironic about the ending"....."ironic""ending".....fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffacepalming potatos.... HE WAS A WANTED MAN! A WANTED MAN!!! Y U NO SEE WHAT I SEE!?!?!?!?!

  19. The fact that Jimmy and William had the same criminal history, is the way he reflected part of his life. Agatha was going to die and also because even if it meant for him to risk it all he did because he loved her and Annabel. In my opinion Annabel is going to forgive him for his fast because after all he changed, the clue is that he wanted to get rid of his tools for good. the ironic part of the ending is that he changed and that he wanted to be a better person but in the end he had to commit a crime (opening the safe) to save a life, Agatha's life.

Ps. sorry for the tardiness I was going to do it yesterday but I forgot. :D

  20. 1.William sydney porter's life was reflected in the story because it had similiar experiences with jimmy valentine. Like that they wanted to escape from there past because they were ashamed of what they did.

    2. Because he knew that hews the best in opening safe and was proud of his skill. Besides he was happy that he could do something good with his skill.

    3. Some clues that the autor provide that can foshadow the future are when jimmy ask his friend to pick up his home made tools and bring then to him, when the autor focuse on the children playing with the vault's knobs, and when he ask for his wife flower pin(witch makes you think he is going to do something with that)

    4. The story has a situational irony because the skills that he use to used as a criminal were the ones that help him save the girl.
